Yes, I’m an enthusiast, not quite a fanatic. I wasn’t always, of course. In fact, I didn’t start drinking it regularly until I was on a deployment as a marine on a U.S. Navy ship. We ran out of everything else except purified saltwater while we were floating in the Mediterranean Sea off the coast of Lebanon for a month.
That was in 1983, when I was 22. I’ve had at least one cup every day since then, except when it was impossible for me to get one. That only happened once or twice that I can remember.
I used to stand duty for 24 hours at a time. I had to drink a lot of coffee to keep myself awake. It would start to leave a nasty taste in my mouth toward the end of my shift. That is, until I learned to brush my tongue along with my teeth every few hours.
I like my coffee black with sugar. Creamers hide the taste I like, whether they’re dairy or non-dairy creamers.
Although I like just about anything made with the real thing, I have to avoid most of it. At my age, all I have to do is look at something fattening and I’ll gain weight. I’ll still give in to temptation at times.
I like coffee candies, cakes and donuts. I like coffee liqueurs, like Kahlua. I’m not a connoisseur, though, because I don’t want to be an expert. I just want to consume and enjoy.
